History of Sherman Full Gospel

Young Gayle and Yvonne Gaines Gayle and Yvonne Gaines were married on September 14, 1954. God blessed them with a son (Gayliss Ray) on Feb. 28th, 1956. During the first six years of their marriage, Yvonne prayed and believed God for her husband’s salvation. In 1959 her prayers were answered and Gayle was saved and filled with the Holy Ghost at Hesler Assembly of God in Owenton, KY and God call him to preach His Word.

In 1965, the country girl (Yvonne) from Owen County answered the call to preach and her first revival was at Dry Ridge Assembly of God. It lasted six weeks with many souls saved. Later, Gayle and Yvonne felt the need for a church in Grant County. They were ordained in 1965 and started Sherman Full Gospel Assembly with Gayle as pastor. They began with 11 people in a garage next door to the property where we are now located.
Old Sherman Full Gospel church building
After a few months, we purchased our first building which had been an old motel. With hard labor and much prayer, we remodeled and expanded the church twice. In 1986 Gayle had his second heart attack and became unable to pastor full time. Gayliss and his wife Mary had been the assistant pastors, but now had to step into Gayle’s shoes and become pastors. What shoes those were to fill!!!

Pastor Ray (as most of us call him) began to feel God urging him to build another church as we were outgrowing our present one. In 1992 we moved into the new church on Dixie Hwy between Dry Ridge and Crittenden. As the church continued to grow, God gave our pastor a vision of another church to be built next to our existing one. A progress in work for four years, we finally moved into our new 1000 seat sanctuary in 2004. The older church became our reception hall Gayle and Yvonne Gaines founders of Sherman Full Gospel churchwith some Sunday school rooms.

Gayle left this earth to go to his Heavenly home in 2005. Yvonne is still very active in the church; sings in one of the praise teams, preaches, and she assists in about every activity of the church. Pastors Ray and Mary have continued the work that Gayle and Yvonne began over 40 years ago.
